The Knowledge: mountain bike insurance

Mountain bike bicycle insurance is important, from holidaying to general day to day pottering around.  Personal mountain bike insurance will cover you if you hit someone when you are out and about and people make a claim against you, as well as covering you for your injuries.  In this article I will explore the ever growing number of options, and offer a warning of the limitations of your household policy.

If you are serious about your mountain biking, and do more than toddling off down the toe path with your kids, then you might need to consider investing in some mountain bike insurance.  Lets say for example that you are going mountain biking in Croatia for which you would need a particular mountain bike holiday insurance, you will need to make sure you are covered!

Unlike car or house insurance, bikes insurance price is reasonable.

There are two types of insurance available, but you might find that one insurance will cover all your needs.

  • Personal insurance (including illness or injury)
  • Bike insurance, which covers more the problems associated with holidays and/or theft.

MTB personal insurance is a bit like fire and theft for you car, but instead they cover you. Very important, because they will get you home safely, and then go on to cover you for any unexpected medical bills, rehab if you need it, luggage cover, dental, and some for loss of earnings. This last item might need careful looking at as it is usually staged by the schedule.

They will also look after you if through accident you end up staying longer in your holiday destination.

When you are looking to make some sort of decision, don’t base it on just the costs, but the benefits you might get too.

Insuring your bike is sometimes on a different policy, sometimes the same, so it pays to look around; However, remember that the more you want covered the more you might miss some small print or other which will mean you aren’t as fully covered as you think.  The best mountain bike insurance policies come in what you might think of as a modular variety where you can add different parts to the policy to coer you.

Probably the most important thing to do is to make sure that the policy you take out actually will cover you. It’s not necessarily true, but it is a good rule of thumb to assume that the insurance company is going to try to wriggle out of paying up if something goes wrong. That means you will be extra vigilent making sure that you take out the right policy.  That’s not to say that

Make sure, for example, that you have mountain bike travel insurance if you are going abroad that covers you abroad! Many are quite specific as well as to which part of the world they cover.

What do you want covering too? Against loss, theft, or if you should become injured and not be able to ride your bike. What about if your holiday gets cancelled?

Prices

You can insure a few days, and individual holiday, or a whole year at a time. Whole years, even at top dollar for bike and personal insurance are only about £250 p.a. And if you can be specific – say you are taking your new wife up a steep 1:2 with a 1000 drop for your honeymoon on 25th June – you can get insurance for just that day.

If you are looking to insure against theft, then do line up how much you are paying with the alternatives (see below)

I have already mentioned that it is a good idea to make sure that the company you get your mountain biking insurance with don’t find a way out of paying up if they need to. Read that small print! And then, make sure you have completed everything necessary to be able to be fully insured. (Do you ahve to complete a registration process, for example?)

Your insurance should cover you at home too, if you get the right one. That means that you are covered on your daily commute too, which could be important to you, expecially if being hit by a car could mean you being off work for a time. But prevention is often better than the cure, and at the same time as looking into insurance, chek out locks and the security of your bicycle storage. You may find that your schedule demainds security!

Finally, what other options could you explore?

Firstly, you should consider just saving! If you don’t want personal injury cover, then could you just save up enough to buy a new bike should it be stolen?

Secondly, do you already have cover from an insurance company that is either already sufficient? Or that with a small increase in your premium will cover you for travel and theft of you bike? Again, read the small print to check that you have obeyed every letter of that schedule. There are many clauses in household insurance that  make obtaining mountain bike insurance that will cover you properly difficult.  For example, are there age restrictions; can you race your bike or use it on business; what about transport – are you covered for having it on cycle racks for cars; and some household insurances don’t cover you outside of the home.
