Be Inspired With A Lance Armstrong Poster
What isn’t there to love about Lance Armstrong. Born on 18 September 1971, he won Le Tour an amazing 7 times in a row. He fought testicular cancer, and established a foundation in his own name in 1997 as a focus for cancer research. If you get a Lance Armstrong poster and hang it above your bed, in the living room, above the coffee table or even in the bicycle storage shed you won’t have wasted your money. The guy is incredible.
Oh, and he popularised wearing silicon wristbands as a fund raiser.
As he reaches towards his 39th birthday, questions are being raised as to whether or not he will be able to find the fitness level required to make an impression in Le Tour. I would ask, why not? Though Contador, this year’s favourite, is 11 years his junior, which is going to give him a few problems as he attempts to get his lightweight frame he still is a most impressive athlete.
Interestingly, a study performed on him a few years ago didn’t reveal anything particularly superhuman about him other than he is a very dedicated individual. Training has provided him an incredibly powerful heart that can beat at over 200 times a minute, providing muscles with the much needed oxygen supply which is absorbed through super-efficient lungs. His tests show that his lungs absorb more oxygen than most people (called VO2 Max by the science boffs).
Probably his one big advantage though is a low lactic acid production rate. Lactic acid is produced whenever you do ‘work’. The bigger the muscle, the more is produced, hence my own willingness to lose some muscle tissue along with body fat, a natural consequence of dieting (though it can be limited by using free weights training or multi-gym equipment training). Pound for pound though, Lance’s lactic acid production is half that of most other people’s. So what effect does lactic acid have?
There are various theories, but most point to the fact that the body is clever at protecting itself from over fatigue. Lactic acid is a kind of safety valve, and when it builds to high the muscle kind of switches off the ability to contract any more, which stops it being over exhausted and damaged. Quite likely, this effect kicks in way before it has to. In Lance this is certainly the case and the lower percentage of this ‘switch off’ chemical permits him to not only keep going for longer, but also recover much more quickly than many of his peers.
Bottom line is that hanging Lance Armstrong posters on your wall will inspire your road bike cycling efforts each time you look at it.
