Cycling Distance Monitor 28th May 2010

I hurt.  I hurt bad.  But I managed to get the bike up to 30 miles tonight!  2.5 hours to do it, but that is the furthest that I have managed to cover in 24 years!

I followed all the guidelines.  I kept the cadence at about 70-90, and dropped down the gears where I needed to to keep that pace up.

I was also careful to make sure that my breathing never got particularly heavy, even on the hills.

I drank on the bike, but stopped for a brief stretch and a couple of glucose tabs, which I know isn’t exactly and electrolyte drink, or even a proper energy bar.  But I will be making some energy bars tomorrow (got a great recipe, I will blog it sometime!)

It was quite odd, because as I came in at the end of the ride I felt absolutely fine.  If someone said I should do another 10 I would have said, “why not?”

That was until the DOMS hit!  DOMS: delayed onset muscle soreness.  Usually it doesn’t happen until about 24 hours after, but this time I got it after about an hour.  And boy does it hurt.

This has really surprised me, because being a chap who has thrown around a few free weights and multi-gym equipment in his time I know what causes stiffness and aching.  It’s heavy stretching things, isn’t it?

It’s not spinning lightly, and hardly raising a sweat….

Wrong.  Its just as bad if not worse than a heavy session in the gym.  But boy is it good!!

The only problem I had was the chain jammed.  It unjammed quick enough by back pedalling, but there was a crazy rattling noise which forced me to stop.  Bike upside down, I tracked it down to the chain having popped out of the rear Derailler!  How it had happened I have no idea at all, but I was glad that I had brought my bike tools.

I usually carry a multi-tool screwdriver, and a multi-tool for the bike, plus bike spanner.   Though my dad nagged me last week to get a full puncture repair kit, which makes sense.  I’m 40 and still nagged by my folks, how sad is that!?

Once I had tracked the problem down, pressure in the right place got the chain back on but I need to twiddle the settings on the derailler to get it running smoothly again.  To be honest, I was glad that  a few weeks ago I took the time out to finally understand what all those twiddly knobs and screws on the derailler actually do, and I had worked it out in the comfort of my own back room rather than out on the road.
